BPW Coffs Coast Unites for a Powerful Candle Lighting Ceremony

February 17, 2025

BPW Coffs Coast members and friends recently came together for a moving tribute to one of the world’s most influential women’s organisations—BPW International. This global network unites women across cultures, languages, and traditions, all driven by a shared mission to empower and advance women worldwide.

More than 94 years ago, BPW was founded by Dr. Lena Madesin Phillips in the United States. She encouraged BPW Clubs to hold an annual International Night celebration, which later evolved into the Candle Lighting Ceremony—a tradition that continues to unite BPW members around the world.

We were honoured to welcome BPW Australia’s National President, Gillian Lewis, as our guest speaker. A dynamic leader and dedicated advocate for women’s empowerment and safety, Gillian champions gender equality, social justice, and the promotion of women’s rights on local, national, and international levels.

During her address, Gillian shared an inspiring message from BPW International’s newly elected President, Diana Barragán Medina of Peru. Diana’s vision for her presidency is encapsulated in four powerful words: Inspire, Innovate, Empower, and Transform—a call to action for all BPW members to help forge a sustainable future.

Gillian also highlighted the incredible work being done by BPW clubs worldwide to advance women’s equality. At the recent BPW International Congress in St. Kitts (November 2024), key resolutions were adopted, paving the way for action at both national and local levels. Over the decades, new and pressing concerns for women’s welfare have emerged, demanding our collective attention. Climate change, modern slavery, and the restricted mobility of refugees facing economic hardship and conflict are now critical issues at the forefront of BPW’s advocacy efforts.

A poignant moment of the evening was the lighting of candles in solidarity with our BPW sister clubs across the globe. In a symbolic gesture of remembrance and hope, a candle was lit and then extinguished to honour those who have lost their lives in conflict. It was then relit as a beacon of resilience and optimism for a brighter future.

This annual tradition reaffirms BPW’s unwavering commitment to creating a better world for women and future generations. As we continue our work, we stand united in our mission—because together, we are stronger.
