Siobhan O’Mara, a dedicated Speech Pathology student entering her third year at the Coffs Harbour Campus, embodies the values of perseverance, compassion, and advocacy. Her passion for improving communication and fostering inclusivity drives her to make a lasting impact in her chosen field.
Siobhan views Speech Pathology as more than a career—it’s a platform to advocate for gender equality, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate diversity. With the support of a scholarship, she aims to focus more deeply on her studies, engage in meaningful projects, and champion inclusivity. Her ultimate goal is to contribute to a future where all individuals, regardless of gender or ability, are empowered to reach their full potential.
A Story of Resilience
At just 20 years old, Siobhan was diagnosed with C-PTSD, stemming from early experiences of sexual trauma and domestic violence. Shortly after, at 21, she received an ADHD diagnosis. These challenges often made her feel incapable, but instead of succumbing to self-doubt, she sought help, faced the stigma associated with her conditions, and pursued her goals with unwavering determination.
Navigating the complexities of trauma and ADHD has required incredible resilience. Siobhan has demonstrated personal strength and a commitment to overcoming obstacles, proving that intelligence and capability are defined not by limitations but by the resolve to rise above them.
Commitment to Social Contribution
Siobhan’s dedication to supporting others is evident in her professional and volunteer roles. She works in two Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses, managing the needs of twelve participants with complex disabilities, including those with challenging behaviours. This role demands not only leadership and teamwork but also empathy and adaptability.
Her contributions extend beyond her professional work. Siobhan volunteers with adaptive surfing programs, enabling individuals with disabilities to experience the joy and empowerment of riding waves. She also teaches swimming to children, imparting essential life skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Additionally, Siobhan runs her own dog-sitting business, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit, organisational skills, and ability to manage responsibilities independently. These experiences have refined her leadership abilities and underscored her commitment to making a positive impact on her community
Achievements That Inspire
One of Siobhan’s proudest accomplishments is completing the Preparing for Success Program at Southern Cross University in 2022/2023. This milestone paved the way for her acceptance into the Bachelor of Speech Pathology program. Her academic journey so far has been marked by significant success, including two High Distinctions, four Credits, and two Passes in her first year of study.
Her professional dedication has also been recognised with a nomination for the Bravo CEO Award for Client Outcomes, a testament to her impact as a Disability Support Worker.
Looking Ahead
Siobhan’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the impact of social contribution. She continues to inspire those around her, proving that challenges can be transformed into strengths and that dedication to a meaningful cause can create lasting change.
As she looks to the future, Siobhan aspires to leverage her education and experiences to break down barriers, promote inclusivity, and empower others. With her unwavering commitment and passion, she is well on her way to leaving a profound mark on the field of Speech Pathology and beyond.
